A two-ended drum. Also called "Mrdanga" and not to be confused with the "Mridangam" of Carnatic (South Indian) music. The Pakhavaj is a particularly resonant drum and is used mainly to accompany Dhrupad and Dhamar singing. In the hands of an expert it is capable of producing extremely rousing, valorous and majestic sounds. It is also the preferred drum for accompanying Odissi, the art dance of Orissa. | ||
