What is CROWL?

The word "CROWL" has been coined by joining "CROW" and "OWL".

CROWL represents an art-form spanning all arts - literary, visual and performing - that combines Indian and Celtic traditions. The crow represents Indian culture and the owl represents Celtic culture.

Why crow? Because the crow has an unique place in Indian culture since time immemorial. Kakabhushundi is the name of the ancient and eternal crow of Indian mythology: he sits on top of Mount Kailash in the Himalayas and has seen, and continues to see, all events from the beginning of time. He is the eternal witness and represents Time. He is all-knowing, all-seeing, ever-present. In that sense, he also represents Conscience, Truth and Justice.

The crow is not a regal bird of splendour as is the peacock. It is a worker, and a very motivated and efficient one at that. It cannot be put down but rises to face every challenge and adversity. It is both an individual achiever and a team player. It finds honourable mention in many places in all Indian literature - prose, poetry, drama and also song-lyrics. This ubiquitous bird is the eternal messenger, called upon by lovers to convey tender messages to their loved ones far away. It is industrious, unflagging in energy, clever and does not give up trying. An ancient Sanskrit verse exhorts students to persevere in their studies like a crow. The crow is, in many senses, representative of the persevering, diligent, hard-working, intelligent and sensitive soul of India.

And why the owl? Because in the Celtic tradition, the owl is the Wise Being. It represents the Wisdom of the ages. It is a reservoir of timeless human experience - physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual. It is knowledge incarnate, a complete encyclopedia of all human and superhuman achievement.

Together, the crow and the owl represent all that is good for humanity to strive towards. The CROWL energy is a new energy that draws upon the best of the oriental and the occidental. It is the energy of the future, the energy of the coming Golden Age, the age of Peace, Prosperity, Brotherhood / Sisterhood, Greatness and Bliss.
